AMD India and IISC Bengaluru Partner To Advance AI & HPC Research

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) India and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have formed a partnership project to improve High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI research in the nation.

AMD will work closely with a team of professors and researchers from IISc to study heterogeneous computing including the areas of core design, AI training, inference, and compilation. The research intellectual property (IP) will be jointly owned by the parties. AMD will also sponsor students pursuing research in areas like low-power designs, Machine Learning (ML)-based design optimisations, pruning and quantisation for ML models, as per economic times.

In addition, AMD has donated a cluster of HPC nodes with EPYC Processors, MI Instinct GPUs and Alveo V70 accelerators to IISc. “HPC & AI are fundamentally redefining the world of technology and AMD is at the centre with our portfolio of computing products. The research partnership with IISc, in these areas, will help our engineers find new ways to optimise our products to tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges,” Jaya Jagadish, country head and senior vice president, AMD India said.

Professor Ramaswamy Govindarajan from the computer science and automation department of IISc said this collaboration will “help find innovative solutions in the areas of optimisation, compilation, and partitioning for heterogeneous computing platforms”.

The IISc-AMD India relationship dates back to 2000, when the business established its R&D activities in India.

AMD has also established a research branch under the India Development Centre (IDC) led by senior fellow Prakash Raghavendra. He will collaborate closely with Ivo Bolsens, worldwide head of AMD Research, to spearhead research initiatives in India.
