IBM (NYSE: IBM) unveiled a ten-year, $100 million project with the Universities of Tokyo and Chicago to create a quantum-centric supercomputer with 100,000 qubits at the G7 Summit in Japan.

A completely new and as of yet unfulfilled era of high-performance computing is quantum-centric supercomputing. Even the most cutting-edge supercomputers of these days may not be able to address some of the most important problems in the world, but a 100,000-qubit system may.

Such a potent quantum system, for instance, could open completely new insights into chemical reactions and the kinetics of molecular processes. As a result, scientists may be able to model better carbon capture techniques, find materials for energy grids and electric vehicle batteries, and develop more effective and sustainable fertilisers. All of these things could contribute to the study of climate change.

A global partnership and the activation of talent and resources from many industries and research institutions are being started in order to usher in this potent new paradigm. Over the next ten years, IBM will work to enhance the underlying technologies for this system and design and construct the required components at scale in collaboration with the Universities of Chicago, Tokyo, and IBM's larger global ecosystem.

In the future, IBM wants to broaden these collaborations to include Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory, both of which are home to Department of Energy quantum hubs and are members of the Chicago Quantum Exchange.

Importantly, the two facilities offer skills and knowledge that can make it easier to deploy the technology envisioned in the competition to create a supercomputer focused on quantum mechanics.
