India is growing, capturing a large share of global spacetech pie and finding more domestic applications solutions in areas such as geographic information system (GIS). The government has also overhauled and launched new policies in the areas of space, drone and GIS solutions in past few years. Surveys show that the space tech sector has shown upward trend in the last three years in the case of startups. Within the last three years, the number of startups in the space sector increased to 47 in 2021 from 11 in 2019. At present India falls way behind the major economies such as US and China, accounting for only two percent of space economy. However, with the new government reforms the Indian space sector is expected to capture a larger share of global space economy in the coming years.

Till recent years, the space sector was largely publicized, much private players cannot be seen in the sector. A new change began when government started encouraging private players in the sector. In June 2020 the government announced a new organization, IN-SPACe, as a part of reforms to increase private participation in the space sector. To enhance the diffusion of space technology and boost the space economy within the country, the Department of Space (DOS) is encouraging the participation of private companies in space activities. However only a small portion in Indian space economy contributes to rocket and satellite launch services, remaining 95 percent is related to satellite-based services, and ground-based systems.
