Honda Motorcycles & Scooters will manufacture battery packs in-house with Haryana-based Navitasys in a collaboration that could change the competitive dynamics in an industry segment at the forefront of the green transformation in personal mobility.

“Honda is charting a course to launch an electric model, collaborating with NVT Power (which is Navitasys in India) for battery supplies,” said one of the multiple industry.

The source added that by 2040, the Japanese auto major aims to electrify its entire two-wheeler lineup, as per economic times.

“An electric launch next year could bolster Honda's market position, positioning it as a formidable challenger to Hero,” this person said.

While the specifics of the collaboration were not disclosed, Honda outlined their EV plan for the Indian market in March of this year. This meant launching two electric scooters in India in 2024, including an electrified version of the Activa. Furthermore, it stated that it intends to produce one million EVs per year by 2030.

Honda said that it is developing EVs from the ground up, with a platform named 'Platform-E' serving as the foundation for multiple electric two-wheelers, including fixed and swappable battery-type models. It went on to explain that over the next five years, it intends to have ten electric two-wheelers in its inventory.

According to predictions, India's two-wheeler sales would reach 28 million units by 2030, rising at a CAGR of 7.2%. Over 42% of these sales are expected to be electrified by then.
