In the digital era, e-government or digital government is delivering accountability, transparency, access, sharing and collaboration of information across multiple public organizations. With the advent of cloud, the use of information and communication technology has improved variety of government functional areas like healthcare, justice and governance.

The e-government interoperability enables the adoption of Internet and World Wide Web specifications across all government systems. It is a significant approach to reduce cost and mitigate risk from the government system while allowing the citizens to tow the benefits of Internet by adapting cloud computing. Interoperable e-government systems working across the public sector delivers better services tailored to the needs of the citizens. However, e-government interoperability issues affect the interconnectivity, data integration, e-services access, transactions, and interactions with citizens, businesses, and other arms of government. Owing to these complexities, the government is committed to ensure that the policies governing information flow addresses the issues interconnectivity, data integration, and content management metadata and e-services access. One of the major requirements of e governance is interoperability standards for the exchange of secure information with non-repudiation. Hence, there is a great need of a well-defined interoperability policy for e-government architecture. Interoperability is necessary for the delivery of citizen-centric solutions and due to lack of interoperability and standards in e-governance services one is not able to utilize the service from various levels. Interoperability requires open standards. Standardization efforts have helped in simplification of business processes and can also help in governance processes. The standards can further tackle issues like scalability, replication and interoperability.
