The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a next-generation navigational satellite using a GSLV rocket from Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota, with the goal of providing real-time locating and timing services.

The satellite would deliver real-time locating and timing services over India and a 1,500-kilometer radius around the country.

NVS-01 is the first of two second-generation satellites planned for Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) services, according to ISRO. The NVS family of satellites will support and supplement the NavIC with new functionality.

This series also includes L1 band signals to expand the offerings. NVS-01 will carry an indigenous atomic clock for the first time.

On its 15th flight, the 51.7-meter-tall Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle carried the 2,232-kg navigation satellite NVS-01.

The NVS-O1 satellite was precisely injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit after a 19-minute journey. ISRO said that subsequent orbit-raising procedures will place NVS-01 in the desired Geosynchronous orbit.

The rocket is slated to place the satellite in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) at a height of roughly 251 km after nearly 20 minutes of flight, according to ISRO.

The NVS-01 has navigation payloads in the L1, L5, and S bands, and the second-generation satellite series will have an indigenously built Rubidium atomic clock.

Among the various aspects of the NavIC series are terrestrial, aerial, and maritime navigation, precision agriculture, location-based services in mobile devices, and marine fishing.

This is the GSLV's sixth operational flight using an indigenous cryogenic stage. According to ISRO, the mission life of NVS-01 will be greater than 12 years.
