Geographic Information Systems are becoming increasingly beneficial in improving the efficiency in various industry segments. Be it construction, logistics & supply chain or agriculture, every industry is witnessing a pressing case for making use of geospatial data. The data collected is analysed to extract insights which help in deciding the future course of action or bringing efficiency into the existing process. According to a report by Allied Market Research, the India GIS software market size is expected to become worth $0.39 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 16.2 percent.

“As  location  data  gets  ubiquitous,  pervasive,  and  ‘by  default’  in  our  daily  living,  geospatial  industry  is  opening  up  its  closely  guarded  boundaries  to  larger  market  drivers,  and  creating  new  growth  opportunities,  weathering  through market forces and consumer behaviour. A host of next generation entrepreneurs are joining the innovation bandwagon and beginning to explore the hidden treasure of spatial thinking, empowering IT-enabled services and optimizing engineering workflows and business processes,” says Sanjay Kumar, CEO at Geospatial Media and Communications.

Cloud Fuelling GIS Engine

Several new technologies are fuelling the growth of GIS further and taking its adoption to the next level. Cloud has influenced the adoption of GIS in a big way. As a result, it is increasingly becoming more intrinsic to business operations. Buttressed by such new technologies, the growth of geospatial solutions has surged exponentially. The technical barriers are now being overcome and we are increasingly seeing organizations fully deploy their entire GIS to the cloud.

Big Data Turning Around the Insights

Another technology trend that is proving to be a driving force in the evolution of GIS is big data which is helping in creation of GIS databases that work as a huge repository of information to be used in charting out the road map in various sectors. Along with these advancements, the industry continues to witness impressive growth in high-performance computing networks, especially for the public and private agencies that are slowly transitioning their data processing and storage to the cloud. Connecting to the vast network of devices that are capable of providing data in real time is going to be the next advancement in GIS technology.

Growing in leaps and bounds, GIS technology is all set to be democratized further, expanding its use cases to new segments. Looking to tap into this potential, many solution providers are venturing into this domain. It would be interesting to see how the technology shapes up and evolves in conjunction with other emerging technologies in the near future.
