Google has introduced its experimental AI Mode in India, enhancing the search experience with advanced, interactive capabilities. AI Mode is aimed at solving complex, multi-layered questions that might often need several searches and allows users to explore topics deeply by breaking questions into subtopics and providing summaries, follow-up prompts, and relevant links.
The tool supports diverse query formats, including text, voice, and visual inputs via Google Lens, which is widely used in India. For instance, users can upload a plant photo and request care instructions, receiving detailed steps with supporting links. Now available in English through Google Labs, this feature, powered by a tailored Gemini 2.5 model, is integrated into Google Search for Android and iOS users.
Google reports that early testers are submitting queries two to three times longer than standard searches, using AI Mode for tasks like trip planning, product comparisons, and complex how-to guides.

The AI Mode feature uses what the company calls the “query fan-out technique”, which breaks down the question into subtopics and performs multiple searches on your behalf. The new AI Mode can also be applied to access sources in real-time or utilise an existing knowledge graph to obtain facts about the real world and browse billions of products.
AI Mode maintains Google’s quality and ranking standards, defaulting to traditional results when AI confidence is low. It also allows follow-up questions for refined searches and builds on the success of AI Overviews, used by over 1.5 billion monthly users globally. In markets like India and the US, AI Overviews have driven a 10% increase in engagement with complex queries.
Google is committed to improving AI Mode’s accuracy and factuality, ensuring a reliable search experience. Users can access this feature via the Labs section in the Google app.
