  • HAL to independently build and commercialize SSLVs with full tech transfer.
  • ISRO to train HAL for SSLV production and launches over two years.
  • Plan aims to create a self-reliant small satellite launch ecosystem.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) has stated that Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has got the contract worth ?511 crore to build the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe stated, "This is one of the first instances of a space agency transferring complete launch vehicle technology to a company. HAL will now have the capability to independently build, own and commercialise SSLV launches".

He added, "HAL will be profitable once it starts manufacturing SSLV rockets… Two years from now, it will be the only company making them in India".

HAL won through a technical and financial evaluation process against two competitors, one led by Alpha Design Technologies with Agnikul Cosmos and Walchand Industries, and the other led by Bharat Dynamics with Skyroot Aerospace, BHEL and Keltron.

"The overall approach will be phase-wise progression. Our objective is to establish a parsing small satellite launch ecosystem from Indian spaceports," said HAL's CMD, Dr D.K. Sunil. The technology transfer of SSLV will be developed pursuant to a contractual agreement between HAL within ISRO, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) and IN-SPACe. ISRO will provide HAL with support and training for two SSLV's over the next two years.

On Friday at 2:53 PM, HAL shares were up 1.24% to ?4,962.90 on the NSE.

Rajeev Jyoti, Director, Technical Directorate at IN-SPACe said, "The system is multi-disciplinary in nature and will require rigorous training of HAL personnel at both ISRO and HAL sites".
