Honeywell Partners with OneWeb to Enhance Data Services to Aircraft
FREMONT, CA: In an attempt to enhance data services offered to aircraft, Honeywell has recently joined with OneWeb- a satellite internet startup, reports Alwyn Scott for REUTERS. Leveraging OneWeb's bandwidth, Honeywell will provide aircraft services like transmitting weather and navigation data, streaming maintenance data from engines and other equipment to the ground and supplying fast internet connections to passengers. According to Carl Esposito, vice president of marketing and product management, Honeywell, the company offers some services via satellite providers like Iridium Communications and Inmarsat; and with the faster speed and low latency offered by OneWeb, Honeywell gains 50 megabits per second per aircraft, thus enhancing the market by three to five times. Reportedly Honeywell will sell equipments that connect aircraft to satellite and also it can cover a wider range of aircraft with this new agreement made. OneWeb is planning to come up with small satellites by 2017. Supposedly the satellite will weigh 275 pounds (125 kilograms) and is also built with a partner. More details on launch partners and satellite are not revealed.
