For helping different walks of life, India is working on developing a framework for a longer-term AI superpower. In collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing for developing a supercomputer, the Indian government is trying for facilitating AI framework.

It is believed that AI will be crucial for improving governance, including top use cases in the field of social welfare, policymaking, and healthcare. Countries like the United States and China have already taken giant strides towards AI development.

The CEO of the National E-Governance Division, Abhishek Singh, stated, “Globally, we are recognized as a country, which has a vast AI-skilled workforce, along with a good network of startup companies for creating products. However, the only thing lacking is the computing capabilities, which is required. And that’s why the government is currently working on a framework and an ecosystem to facilitate that.”

Singh added, “Computing facilities are being set up in India and will allow the AI, startups, tech entrepreneurs and researchers to leverage the infrastructure that has been built to run their algorithms and to create “world-class AI products.””

When compared to other countries, India holds a unique position of becoming the new superpower in Artificial Intelligence, encompassing ‘a robust IT ecosystem and all the capabilities for democratizing any technology.”

Singh said, “India ranks among the top countries in a Stanford AI index. It also ranks high when it comes to a relevant skilled workforce, startups segments, and IT experts and professionals that are skilled in AI. He further stressed the requirement for a necessary computing capability to run these complex algorithms.”

Singh also stated, “Among the top 500 supercomputers in the world, for running complex algorithms, the majority is in China, with about 140 or 150 are in the US. But, India so far has only two such computers with one currently in use for weather prediction.”
