Maradona's "Hand Of God" Wouldn't Have Stood If Technology Had Been Around

Diego Armando Maradona etched his name in the footballing history when the mercurial talent rose up to challenge the then English goalkeeper Peter Shelton and flicked the ball with his hand that gave Argentina the crucial 1-0 lead against England in the Quarter Finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Mexico. Argentina would go on to win 2-1 that day.

Moments later in the same match, Diego Maradona would go on to score one of the greatest goals ever witnessed in the football world cup's history, singlehandedly dribbling past the entire England team baring the two frontmen to score a sensational goal. Argentina would go on to beat Belgium in the Semi-finals and Germany in the finals to lift the trophy that year.

However, with the advent of technologies such as Video Assistant Referees (VAR), and Goal Line Technology – a great deal of transparency and quality has returned to Football. A fact which Diego Maradona himself admitted in an exclusive interview back in the year 2017 when VAR and Goal Line Technology were still in the baby stages of its implementation in Football. The God of Football told FIFA.com., "I thought about it and, sure, that goal wouldn't have stood if technology had been around,"

He further added, "And I'll tell you something else: at the 1990 World Cup I used my hand to clear the ball off the line against the Soviet Union. We were lucky because the referee didn't see it." You couldn't use technology back then, but it's a different story today."

The usage of technologies such as Video assistance, heat trackers, hawkeye, motion sensors, impact sensors, and so on is something that is not new in the world of sports. Many sports, including Cricket, Tennis, and Baseball, to name a few, have consistently been using technology to get clarity and make the right decisions in the field of play.

It was only back in 2017 when technologies such as VAR and Goal Line Technology were first implemented in individual Domestic leagues and by FIFA during International friendlies. While other sports such Cricket and Baseball are stop-start games and waiting for a while to get the just decision does not affect the overall outcome of the actual gameplay, the same cannot be said about Football. Football is a heavy contact sport with a lot of movement happening on and off the ball. Implementing the right procedure for technology such as VAR was not an easy decision to make initially, and it took FIFA and all the Football Associations around the world a while to sort out the technology in a way that would not destroy the charm of the game.

There have been a lot of incidents in the history of Football World Cup alone, where the outcome would have been entirely different had the technology been around. We would have lived in an alternate timeline in history. It was not only about Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" that wouldn't have been counted. Football history is filled with such incidences. England back in 1966 won the World Cup Final against Germany with a goal where the ball never crossed the goal line. And, the "Gods of Football" gave England a dose of its own medicine when back in the 2010 Round of 16 match between England and Germany, English midfielder Frank Lampard's piledriver shot hit the top of the crossbar and bounced inside the goal line but the referee didn't spot it, and the goal was never counted.
