OpenAI has launched a significant new AI agent for its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, which is designed to autonomously accomplish complex real-world projects. With this launch, OpenAI is making a giant leap in the evolution of AI assistants as the company stakes a claim at the front of the AI applications race (with help from its partner, Microsoft).
The next-generation AI agent is available to subscribers of ChatGPT's Pro, Plus and Team plans. Its agentic functionality allows ChatGPT to go beyond conversation and begin acting; much like a human assistant would. The AI can plan and order an outfit for a wedding, for instance, while considering the dress code and weather in their area.
OpenAI's agent now incorporates prior released features, such as "Operator," which allows ChatGPT to navigate and interact with websites, and "Deep Research," which was created for performing multi-step inquires or investigations. The agent is powered by a virtual computing environment embedded in ChatGPT, which now has the ability to use a set of tools to access and utilize internet resources to complete prompts.

To build upon its functionality, ChatGPT is also able to now interact with third-party applications such as Gmail and GitHub, from which it can look up personal and contextual knowledgeable data, allowing it to utilize this learner data to provide additional tailoring of responses and perform specific actions. An example of this, is a user could direct the bot to pull their relevant emails or recent code commits to help a professional optimize processes.
The introduction of ChatGPT’s agent is consistent with the trend of agentic AI that is sweeping through various tech industries. Companies like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle are all betting on AI agents to drive productivity, automate rote tasks, and reduce costs. OpenAI's agent is clearly a response to this trend, providing a business and individual with a robust cognitive assistant that could complete increasingly complex tasks.
The introduction of the agent illustrates OpenAI continues to find ways to expand its products by integrating conversational AI with a form of function in the world. As enterprise customers look to overlay smarter tools into their workflows, ChatGPT's agent is a versatile and scalable option that has been crafted to link wayfaring human to autonomous task completion, in real-time.
