Petronas and Microsoft have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their strategic partnership, emphasizing innovation and sustainability to cultivate an AI-enabled economy and ecosystem in Malaysia while advancing Asia’s energy transition.
The agreement was formalized on the sidelines of Energy Asia 2025, with Petronas represented by Senior Vice-President of Projects Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof and Vice-President of Group Technology & Commercialization Izwan Ismail, and Microsoft Malaysia by Managing Director Laurence Si.
Mohd Yusri underscored Petronas’ vision for innovation, stating, “By harnessing our joint expertise in innovation and sustainability, we are steadfast in advancing adoption of AI and Cloud capabilities in a manner that promotes sustainable energy practices, in support of Malaysia’s aspirations of building an AI economy with a robust ecosystem in which everyone thrives.”
He further said that innovation is not a technology; rather, it seeks to create smarter, cleaner and sustainable power to the organizations, Malaysia and its citizens in joint agreement with Microsoft in meaningful progress.

Laurence Si highlighted the role of Microsoft’s new Malaysia West cloud region, saying, “With Microsoft’s new cloud region in Malaysia, we are committed to supporting Petronas with secure, scalable, and sustainable cloud solutions that will drive growth and innovation in Malaysia’s energy sector.” The partnership will leverage this infrastructure to accelerate AI and energy innovation.
The collaboration will focus on fostering a vibrant AI ecosystem in Malaysia, empowering organizations to harness AI for economic growth and societal benefit. Through joint initiatives, Petronas and Microsoft aim to position Malaysia as a regional leader in AI capabilities, supporting nation-building efforts with sustainable and innovative solutions.
