Automation and intelligence are two attributes that are most sought after today. Businesses are vying to get their operational processes more automated and intelligent. In the context of software testing, intelligent automation is something that is expected to be on the radar in 2020, according to numerous reports. To date, quality assurance (QA) has been the approach of choice in the software testing world. But QA has now become an increasingly complex field that encompasses a wide variety of skills and technology. QA has metamorphosed into a new entity, showcasing a renewed vigor from test automation and DevOps to pipeline integration in order to bring in an element of quality from the beginning of every development project. With application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) getting more pronounced in software test automation, AI is making the testing process smarter, allowing teams to leverage AI/ML to optimize their automation strategies.

According to a MarketsandMarkets report, the global automation testing market is expected to become worth USD 28.8 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 18 percent. The report cites increasing adoption of agile and DevOps methodology in SDLC as the major factor that will be driving the growth of the market. AI/ML approach since its application in testing has although proven to be considerably effective, the recent advancements in AI/ML systems with the increasing amount of data at their disposal have thrown up new opportunities to apply AI/ML in testing. Moreover, with the advent of new methodologies like Agile, the companies are bringing in testing much earlier in the software development cycle. Having a scarcity of skills in the domain, many companies are looking to outsource their software testing needs, which allows them to reduce cost on testing and obviates the need for in-house resources to work on it, directing their resources to focus on their core competency.

"Quality assurance is no longer the last thing you do before the software launches; it weaves through the entire software life cycle, with business goals attached," says Brenda Hall, CEO of software quality assurance firm Bridge360.

Similar to the aforementioned trends, there are several other technology trends that are going to redefine QA & testing and it is slated to reshape into a more mature and end-to-end phenomenon. Hence, there is a strong need for the software industry to be ready to inculcate the latest testing trends within their organizations which will ultimately help them meet the changing demands of the business world.
