It will initially be incorporated into DingTalk, Alibaba's internal messaging software, and may be used to write emails, summarise meeting notes, and create business proposals. Moreover, Tmall Genie, Alibaba's voice assistant, will receive it.
"We are at a technological watershed moment driven by generative AI and cloud computing, and businesses across all sectors have started to embrace intelligence transformation to stay ahead of the game," CEO Daniel Zhang said in a statement.
Alibaba's stock increased 3% in morning trading.
Tongyi Qianwen will be made available to Alibaba Cloud's customers so they can create their own unique large language models.
Since the release of the ChatGPT chatbot sensation by Microsoft-backed OpenAI late last year, interest in generative AI, which learns how to take actions from prior data to produce new content, has increased significantly on a global scale.
Since then, other companies, such as Google and Baidu Inc. of Alphabet Inc., have advertised their AI algorithms and launched comparable chatbots.
Tongyi Qianwen is based on Tongyi, a framework for pre-trained models that Alibaba owns and uses to combine different AI models.
