YouTube, Instagram, Twitch and Facebook. The only common factor between all of them is they have no content. The content creation is done by users of the site, and the site pays them in return. Advertisement Revenue is the general way creators on these platforms get paid. The Indian influencer marketing industry reached 12 billion INR in 2022, which is projected to grow 25% annually to 28 billion INR by 2026. What was once done as a hobby is now one of the country’s fastest contributors to tax revenue, and all these platforms have noticed how immensely the creators on their platforms are contributing to the communities. As a result, the aforementioned big players have expanded the payment options apart from the common ad revenue for their creators to stay committed and present themselves as a lucrative option for other creators in the future. In the last few years, the options mentioned below are the prominent monetization options that have been widely accepted by the creators.

Rise of Fan Support Platforms

In recent years, fan support platforms like Patreon, Ko-fi, and Buy Me a Coffee have gained popularity as creators seek more direct ways to connect with their audience and generate income, empowering their content creation passion. These platforms have enabled fans to contribute financially to their favorite creators in exchange for exclusive content, early access, or other perks. This direct-to-fan model not only empowers creators but also strengthens the bond between them and their audience.

"The rise of social has played a significant role in driving the PR industry forward. Today, the role of social media is mainly to create conversations with the target audience. Thus, instead of the usual way of storytelling, PR professionals need to think about how they can leverage content on social media to initiate organic and genuine conversations with their target customers," VorasitTurongsomboon, Managing Director, MSL Thailand.

Patreon is a prime example of a fan support platform. Creators on Patreon can receive monthly pledges from their fans in exchange for exclusive content, creating a direct connection between creators and their audience while offering fans a way to financially support the content they love.

Subscription Models and Exclusive Content

Subscription-based models have become a game-changer in content monetization. Platforms like Substack for newsletters and Patreon for various content types have proven that audiences are willing to pay for content that resonates with them. Offering exclusive content to subscribers has not only provided creators with a steady income but also has created a sense of exclusivity, motivating fans to support their favorite creators on an ongoing basis.

"Luxury brands have historically faced considerable inertia when embracing e-commerce potential and are selective about the technologies they employ in order to maintain a level of exclusivity," Phil Scanlon, Senior Vice President for Global Solution Engineering, Solace.

Substack has gained popularity as a subscription-based platform for writers. It allows authors to offer premium newsletters to subscribers for a monthly fee, demonstrating the success of subscription models in the realm of written content.

Blockchain Technology and Micropayments

The integration of blockchain technology has opened up new possibilities for content creators, particularly in the form of micropayments. Blockchain enables secure and transparent transactions at a very low cost, allowing creators to receive small payments directly from their audience. This microtransaction model has the potential to revolutionize the way creators monetize their work, making it more accessible for fans to support the content they love without committing to larger sums.

"The rise of Fintech has disrupted the payments industry, particularly in cross-border transactions. Traditionally, senders would choose a bank as their fund provider to initiate payments, which would then be received through the receiver's chosen mode," Frans Wiwanto, Managing Director, Flywire.

Brave, a web browser, utilizes blockchain and cryptocurrency (Basic Attention Token or BAT) to enable users to tip content creators they appreciate. This microtransaction model, facilitated by blockchain, demonstrates the potential for small, direct payments to creators without the need for intermediaries.

As these content hosting platforms draw more viewers with every passing day, more and more businesses will be formed to cater to all the new demands that will pop up. These platforms serve as a vehicle for those who desire to have a steady flow of income without all the hassles that come with trying to monetize their art in a traditional manner.

These platforms are tasked with a duty to make sure a healthy ecosystem is sustained for the creator, the viewer, and the advertiser. The shift towards equitable monetization is critical for the sustainability and growth of the industry. Content creators serve as the backbone of the digital ecosystem. By ensuring fair compensation models, an environment that values them will be created by default, which will promote a flourishing content creation community.
