The coverage of mobile networks in rural India has approached almost 97 percent, with at least 6,14,564 villages having access to 4G mobile connectivity. According to Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, approximately 6,23,622 of the 6,44,131 villages in the nation currently have mobile coverage. The government and telecom service providers (TSPs) offer mobile coverage for populated but uncovered villages gradually, he mentioned.

Moreover, the minister stated that the government is launching several initiatives and programs under Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) to enhance telecom connectivity by setting up mobile towers in rural, remote, and mountainous regions of the nation.

Moreover, the BharatNet initiative (formerly referred to as the National Optical Fiber Network), which is financed by Digital Bharat Nidhi, is being executed in stages to ensure broadband connectivity for all Gram Panchayats (GPs) across the nation.

Dr. Pemmasani stated that the Cabinet approved the revised BharatNet Programme for upgrading the current network of BharatNet Phase-I and Phase-II, establishing a network in about 42,000 remaining gram panchayats, along with operation and maintenance for 10 years, all at a total expense of Rs 1,39,579 crore.
