A promising budget with initiatives to enhance connectivity by building infrastructure to bridge the gap between rural and urban India. The smart cities and digital India programme of the government will ultimately create an economic value for the country by aiming to increase employability and reducing immigration. Good to see empowerment of the rural areas for businesses to flourish for a speedy economic growth. The measures to boost domestic manufacturing sectors, revive SEZs, support start-ups and set up new industrial clusters are all initiatives towards creating a progressive and advanced India.

Budget is not a one day event; it is a journey to reach Government’s vision for its term. Given the current situation, budget creation was an arduous task by any standards! The Finance Minister has made pragmatic choices around available resources and has articulated a road map towards reducing the fiscal deficit and fueling economic growth. While all of us hope he achieves the ambitious target of containing the fiscal deficit, executing it seems very challenging. His focus on giving fillip to the infrastructure seems exhaustive and he has rightfully protected the common man’s interest in his first budget. While we welcome his stand on retrospective tax policy and intent to finalise GST this year, the current Government has the potential and mandate to take a stronger stance on subsidy and policy.

Union Finance Minister presented a Good Budget. While there were no anticipated big reforms, the push he gave to infrastructure and housing is very welcoming. The encouragement to startups, entrepreneurship, innovation and incubation is a great initiative and is a high priority area for it will be the engine for employment generation.

Volvo Buses’ review on Union Budget 2014-15
Union Budget 2014-15 announcements indicate steps in a good direction. Volvo Buses welcomed the Union Budget for 2014-15 presented today, which has emphasised on the future vision for cities in India, as well as the country on the whole. Volvo is committed to play its role in supporting modernisation of Indian cities by providing complete & sustainable transport solutions to make public transport an attractive option.
The government has allocated INR 50,000 crore towards urban infrastructure projects that will help in creating sustainable cities. The centre’s proposal to set up Industrial Smart Cities in seven locations is another initiative that will help in developing planned residential cities, while possibly decongesting some of the larger cities.
We hope that when the detailing is done, there is focus on aspects of urban development such as electromobility, sustainable transport solutions such as BRTS and decongestion of cities.
The focus on road safety with allocation of funds is a small step that will be essential in addressing the rising incidents on India’s roads. Another key feature of the budget proposals was the allocation of INR 37,800 crore towards development of better infrastructure – both for National and State Highways.
By way of other announcements in the Union Budget, the government has articulated a vision of a stronger nation – socially and economically – in the years to come. Volvo Buses looks forward to steps that will pave the way for more robust and sustainable development of the country.
